Macadamia

A favorite food of the Australian aborigines, the macadamia nut is a native of the subtropical rain forests of Queens land and New South Wales of Australia. It has been called the “Queens land nut” and the “Australian nut”. Although the macadamia nut was discovered and named by botanists in the mid- 1800’s, it was not until the 1950’s, over a century later, that Australian farmers began to consider this nut an important crop.
Macadamias were introduced to Hawaii in the 1880’s and you can sill find some trees that were brought there in those days, a reminder if the long life and vigor of the macadamia tree. While Hawaii and Australia remain the major producers of macadamia nuts, they are also grown in subtropical regions like South Africa and Central America.
